Press release from the publisher:VANCOUVER, Canada - December 17, 2013< b> - Divcom Software today announces the release of HelpSmith 5.0, a major update of the tool used for creating help files and documents in multiple formats from a single source. The new version includes a modern ribbon style user Interface, a single Table of Contents tree, support for Adobe PDF and Microsoft Word output formats, and better performance on large help projects.
The first notable change of HelpSmith 5.0 is its new ribbon style user interface which now follows modern standards and is similar to the user interface of the widely used applications including Office and other tools. All this lets both experienced and beginner users to feel comfortable when working on a document in a help authoring tool.
The developers of HelpSmith have also revised the two separate tree controls that were used for handling topics and the Table of Contents structure previously. In HelpSmith 5.0 everything is handled with a single tree control which allows you to organize and edit the help project s structure and topic templates without the necessity to synchronize it every time with a separate Table of Contents tree. As a result, this can significantly save the time spent on creating or updating a help project.
As to the new functionality, HelpSmith 5.0 adds the possibility to create Adobe PDF documents. Now HelpSmith users are able to compile their help projects into a full-featured PDF document that supports clickable hyperlinks, PDF outlines (the Bookmarks tab in Adobe Reader), document compression, password encryption, and other PDF-specific features.
Another output format available to HelpSmith 5.0 users is the Microsoft Word document. The improved Word export engine now allows you to create Word documents with a Table of Content, alphabetical Index, clickable hyperlinks, document s header and footer area, and page numbers which can be updated even after editing the generated document directly in MS Word.
It should be pointed out that all of the HelpSmith s features such as build tags, conditional text, variables, topic templates, the possibility to redefine the appearance of a text style in a specific output help format can also be applied to a PDF or Word document as well as to the familiar HTML Help, Web Help, and Printed Manual formats. All these features give almost unlimited possibilities to a technical writer working on documentation.
Finally, when it comes to creating a help project, the ability to handle a large amount of content that may include graphic images and video files is crucial for a help authoring tool. Therefore, the engineers at Divcom Software have optimized the internal core of HelpSmith 5.0 for usage of minimal system resources while working on a large help project.
