A German development team, led by Ingo F?rster, has uncovered a serious security vulnerability with software distributed by Verance. The application is used heavily by the entertainment industry to prevent video piracy. This new vulnerability could allow anyone to implement watermark protected playback of content within Cinavia-enabled players, without need for a software license. Verance markets an application that is used to watermark protected content. This has the effect of preventing the content being copied or redistributed. Where Cinavia differs from other watermarking applications, is that it is capable of actually restricting playback of unlicensed copies of DVD or Blue-Ray disks. What Ingo F?rster and his team have discovered, is a way to implement the same watermark protection that Verance provides, without having to purchase a license for the actual Cinavia application. This means that potentially, any video producer can publish video content, and protect it using Cinavia watermarking, completely free. Speaking about his team?s discovery, Ingo F?rster has said that, ?It is actually quite shocking how easy it was to sidestep the licensing requirements for the software sold by Verance. We can reliably implement watermark protection of video content, using the Cinavia copy protection methods, without a license.? This is a major security issue for Cinavia. The company has worked hard to build a reputation as a leading copy protection company. Its technology is used by some major video publishers to prevent piracy. The team will then add Cinavia watermark copy protection to the video and send it back. Demonstrating the team?s ability to sidestep Cinavia licensing requirements. It is hard to overlook the irony of a company that specializes in developing technology to prevent piracy, selling an application that itself is vulnerable to unlicensed use. Time will tell whether Cinavia step up to the challenge of fixing this vulnerability rapidly, or whether the company will choose to sweep the entire mess under the carpet. In further comment, Ingo F?rster has said that, ?We are dead serious about exposing this vulnerability. The fact that a company working in the anti-piracy space is itself vulnerable, is simply farcical.?
